Discover our traditional Bota Bag, the authentic leather drinking bag
Our Bota Bag is a modern version of the classic leather hydration bag with a rich history, ideal for both re-enactment and modern outdoor activities such as camping, hiking and your daily walk.
This bota is made of high-quality leather with a plastic inner bag and plastic drinking caps, free of BPA, for safe consumption.
It is in the well-known curved kidney shape and has a good capacity of 2 liters.
It has a double closure: the large cap can be removed to fill the bag or pour it into a glass or carafe, while the small cap is designed for drinking without direct mouth contact; Light pressure on the bag creates a trickle of liquid that can direct into your mouth, which is more hygienic.
The bag is equipped with a plastic carrying strap, which you can replace with a rope made of natural fibers to have a more authentic look.
What can you use the bota bag for?
This hydration bladder is ideally suitable for water, chilled or at room temperature - the bag is not suitable for warm liquids.
With good care afterwards, you can also put wine, tea and coffee in it, but certainly not sweetened or no sweet liquids such as fruit juice, soft drinks, energy drinks... Not only do they leave a lot of flavour, they give bacteria and fungi the chance to grow.
Always rinse the bag thoroughly and let it drain well hanging upside down, especially to screw the caps back on.
The curved shape as well as the flexibility also makes this bag very comfortable to wear around your body. It is therefore the perfect partner to take on the road.
Tip: By dampening the leather, you ensure that the contents stay cool, even on warm and hot days!
What is the best way to drink from our bota drinking bag?
The curved shape makes it easy to drink from.
Grab the neck of the bag with 1 hand and position the spout slightly higher than and slightly further away from your mouth; With your other hand you can now gently apply pressure to the rest of the bag, causing a firm jet to come out of the spout.
This avoids contact with the spout itself and allows different people to drink from the bag.
With the traditional Bota Bag, you combine historic charm with modern functionality, perfect for both the history lover and the adventurous outdoorsman.
First Time Use Instructions
It is important to prepare the bota before using it for the first time.
- Heat the bag carefully by placing it in a warm place, e.g. in the sun, close to a heat source (make sure it is not too hot) or possibly at cold ambient temperature by heating it with a hairdryer.
- Make the leather supple by gently moving it; Avoid squeezing hard so as not to damage the inner lining.
- Remove the small cap and inflate the bag until it is completely filled (don't overdo it, it's not a hot air balloon), then close it again and leave the bag inflated for an hour.
- Then fill the Bota Bag with water (2 liters maximum) and leave it for a while.
- Then rinse the bag well a few times.
These steps help the bag to find its final shape and allow the inner pocket to fit snugly with the leather shell.
Our care tips for the bota bag
- It is best to use only water, this causes the least contamination (mold formation) and leaves no taste.
- Rinse the leather bag well every time after use, especially if you have filled it with coffee, tea or wine.
- If you are not using the bag, let it drain well before putting it away, if necessary leave the small cap off.
- Clean the inside regularly with lukewarm water and a mild detergent from e.g. Soapnuts.
We also recommend that you rinse the inner bag more thoroughly with some baking soda and vinegar in case of prolonged use or storage for a longer period of time .
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to keep the leather in optimal condition.
