In Germanic mythology there are 3 Norns or Fates: Urd (what once was), Verdandi (what is born to be) and Skuld (what will be). They spin the thread of life of every living creature and thus determine the fate of man.
They live next to the "well of Urd" under the roots of the tree of life Yggdrasill, which they water every day with water from this well. Without their good care, Yggdrasil would die and so would all life also disappear.
