Additional information
Rudraksha are the seeds of the fruits of the Rudraksha tree (Elaeocarpus Ganitrus), which grows in the Himalayan region (Nepal, Tibet, India). Rudraksha is the combination of 'Rudra' = Sanskrit for Lord Shiva and 'Aksha' = Sanskrit for eye. A Hindu legend says that after seeing the suffering of mankind, the Lord Shiva was so overcome that he wept one tear; where the tear fell on the earth, the first Rudraksha tree began to grow.
For Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists alike, Rudraksha seeds are one of the most sacred objects, laden with mystical and medicinal powers. They have been worn by yogis and holy men since at least the 11th century, in India. In the Ayurvedic scriptures it is described that the Rudraksha has a positive influence on people's health and the seeds are used in the making of medicines.
