Pendant of a Heart-shaped Viking Key – historical status symbol for women
This beautiful pendant is a heart-shaped Viking key, accurately recreated from an original artifact that was discovered in Norrtil near Sigtuna, Sweden.
The original artifact can be admired in the permanent Viking exhibition of the Historical Museum in Stockholm.
This pendant is the perfect gift for any woman!
In the Viking culture (800-1100 AD) A key was much more than a functional object; it was a status symbol for women.
Keys were worn by married women, who are the "key figure" within the household and they proudly wore these keys on their belt or as a pendant around their neck, as a sign of their position and responsibilities.
What makes the Sigtuna key unique is the heart-shaped decoration on the handle, a design that is very reminiscent of oriental belt fittings from the same period.
This points to possible influences from the Middle East and the Silk Road that found their way to Scandinavia through trade and plundering.
