Bring the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese art into your home with this authentic Bizen-yaki lion from the Shōwa period. With its powerful aura and profound symbolism, this unique ceramic sculpture is not only a decorative masterpiece but also a spiritual protector. This sculpture has beautiful red-brown color patterns created by the reaction of the iron-rich clay to the fire of the oven.

In Japanese culture, lions (also known as Komainu or Shi-shi) are considered protectors against negative energy. Their presence at entrances or in living spaces is seen as a source of strength, protection and balance. This sculpture radiates this powerful symbolism and can transform any space with its characteristic appearance.

Unique craftsmanship

This lion is crafted using the age-old techniques of Bizen-yaki, one of the six classic styles of Japanese ceramics, derived from the Okayama-prefectuur.De warm, earthy colors and the natural texture of the sculpture are the result of a careful firing technique without glaze, in which the clay reacts to the heat and wood ash in a traditional wood-fired oven. This gives Bizen-yaki pieces their robust, somewhat coarse, primitive look.

Additional information

Bizen is a traditional Japanese pottery that is known for its rustic appearance and coarse texture. These pieces are characterized by their unique texture and patterns, which are created through combinations of clay, glazes, and firing techniques.

Bizen-yaki is a type of pottery made in and around Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. It is one of Japan's six ancient kilns and has a history dating back a thousand years.

Bizen-yaki pottery is individually shaped from high-quality clay and then dried and fired without painting or glazing. The unique appearance of Bizen-yaki is created by the fusion of clay and flames, resulting in primitive and richly beautiful patterns on the surface known as "yohen".

The absence of glaze gives Bizen-yaki its signature rustic look. Bizen-yaki is fired for about two weeks at temperatures of over 1,200 degrees Celsius and has a higher strength compared to other ceramics, hence the saying, "it won't break even if thrown."
